About the Event
Bullying presents a major issue for children of all ages. According to research provided by PrevNet - Canada's authority on research and resources for bullying prevention.
Girls and boys are both affected by bullying, but indifferent ways, according to research compiled by PREVNet, an umbrella network of 69 leading Canadian research scientists and 55 national youth-serving organizations. Boys are more likely to be victims of physical bullying, while girls tend to experience more sexual harassment, emotional aggression, and online bullying. Worldwide, boys are more likely than girls to engage in physical bullying behaviour. Girls and boys both exhibit similar levels of electronic, verbal, and social bullying.
Research also shows that fighting back makes bullying worse because it can make the bullying situation worse. That when children use aggressive strategies to manage bullying situations, they tend to experience prolonged and more severe bullying interactions as a result. Children are encouraged to be assertive, not aggressive. One way to do this is tell a trusted adult about what has happened to them. Another way is through the use of self-defensive techniques.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the art of being assertive without being aggressive. In Jiu Jitsu you're not taught to initiate confrontational behaviour, but manage it effectively. You learn how to end the physical confrontation without harming yourself or the other person severely.
Join Professor Jason McDonald in this one-day Anti-Bullying Workshop using essential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills and techniques for self-defense.
